MACC & Asociación de Hermanas Latinas Misioneras en América (AHLMA) to empower religious sisters to serve in leadership roles in their ministries thanks to a grant by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation
December 22, 2022
SAN ANTONIO – The Mexican American Catholic College (MACC) in collaboration with the Asociación de Hermanas Latinas Misioneras en América (AHLMA) received a $250,000 grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to empower religious sisters in leadership roles in their ministries. The grant funds will be used to launch a two-year certificate in Intercultural Ministry particularly focused on giving Latina sisters the knowledge and skills to minister in the United States. The grant will initially enable 10 religious Latin American sisters serving in the United States to earn the certificate.
AHLMA is the only association representing Latin American women religious in the United States of America. AHLMA aims to collaborate in implementing programs to have a broad impact in the US Catholic Church and society. Sister’s benefiting from this program with MACC will be better equipped with information, resources, educational materials, and leadership development opportunities to grow and serve in a more qualified manner. The certificate in Intercultural Ministry is designed to prepare participants to serve competently and effectively in contemporary ecclesial ministries and leadership, especially in Catholic parish ministries, religious education, spirituality and spiritual development, youth ministry and catechetical leadership.
With this generous support from the Hilton Foundation and MACC’S scholarships, tuition cost for the Certificate in Intracultural Ministry Formation program is free to the participating sisters.
AHLMA and MACC recognize that many sisters coming from Latin America may not have the academic qualifications to enter institutions of Higher Education, but that can excel in certificate programs, especially when they start them in Spanish and eventually become more familiar with the US culture and the English language. Therefore, the Conrad N. Hilton grant will help Latina sisters to have an open door into more qualified ministerial assignments as well as a bridge to further academic studies that may lead them to obtaining a BA or an MA either
through MACC’s collaborative program with the University of Incarnate Word or at another institution.
Fr. Juan J. Molina, MACC’s President said: “We are glad the Conrad N. Hilton recognizes the need Latina sisters have and can entrust us with empowering them to be better equipped to serve the multicultural Church in the United States. Having the history of Hispanic and multicultural ministry formation as our legacy, MACC is glad to continue serving in such important work.”

MACC partnering with Saint John University’s School of Theology and Seminary’s “Sustained Encuentro: Accompanying One Another on the Way”
July 19, 2022
Saint John’s University has received a grant of $5 million from Lilly Endowment Inc. to support Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary as it develops its new initiative, “Sustained Encuentro: Accompanying One Another on the Way.” Empowered by this grant, Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary (SOT/Sem) will partner with the Mexican American Catholic College (MACC) to prepare next generation leaders for the church and world.
Sustained Encuentro is funded through Lilly Endowment’s Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative, a three-phase initiative to support theological schools across the United States and Canada as they prioritize and respond to the most pressing challenges facing pastoral leaders of Christian congregations both now and into the future. In early 2021, Lilly Endowment awarded Saint John’s University and the SOT/Sem a $50,000 phase one planning grant, followed in January 2022 by a $1 million phase two grant to support its new venture: Conversatio: Creating a Culture of Encounter. Sustained Encuentro is funded through the competitive third phase of Lilly Endowment’s Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative. Phase three grants support a limited number of large-scale, collaborative efforts that explore new educational and financial models for theological education. Lilly Endowment expects to award additional phase three grants in the fall of 2022.
Launching “Sustained Encuentro” comes at an opportune time for the SOT/Sem as it seeks to train and support future pastoral leaders across the United States, particularly in rural areas of need. It forges new partnerships with rural Catholic dioceses and religious institutions that make its degree and certificate programs increasingly accessible for lay ecclesial ministers and diaconal candidates. It delivers top-tier theological education to many who might otherwise lack opportunity. Central to the initiative is a sustained partnership with MACC – a national leader in Latino/a ministry with significant insights into issues such as the radical demographic, cultural, and ecclesial shifts facing today’s church. Aligning the SOT/Sem’s distinguished strengths in ecclesiology, liturgy, sacramental theology and practical theology with MACC’s historic legacy in bilingual education for pastoral and Hispanic ministry, Sustained Encuentro aims to deliver a one-of-a-kind and intentionally intercultural education experience that prepares future Christian leaders, including growing Latino/a communities, for the work of ministry and ecclesial leadership.
