NOVELA FOR TV

Purpose:

Llevar la iglesia a la gente.

Art has to do with the Heart; Hispanics identify with the novela style.
TV is a force for social change.
Our experience in programs such as "Tu Compañero Católico" and CCC is that people are truly touched and act upon what they hear and see.

Cannot be direct proselytizing but stories with redemptive results.

Acknowledged that there have been some efforts at this before

Cannot be too unrealistic

Discussed possibility of radio novelas which are popular in some countries, but not as popular here in the US

Action Steps:

1. Research – what is a telenovela and why are they so successful?

- US networks usually want to control productions –

need to get to gatekeepers first

- ultimate editorial control must belong to us

2. A venture of this kind – whether it becomes a full fledged daily one hour telenovela, or baby-steps (mini series or program of vignettes and discussion) would need sponsors – naturally Catholic but secular sponsors as well.
We have to be able to compete.

3. Identify ways to do catechesis – selling tapes or distributing for parish use and formation.
