These responses to the pre-conference survey present a first look at the
perspectives and questions that each of us will bring to the working
groups. As we receive others, we will post them here.
Estas respuestas a la encuesta presentan una primera mirada a las perspectivas e inquietudes que trabajaremos en grupo. Seguiremos colocando respuestas en cuanto las recibamos.
1) En cuanto a materiales en español para Católicos, ¿cuál es su mayor preocupación?
a) Para los/as católicos/as que sólo hablan español hace falta material (especialmente para la formación de adultos y catequesis familiar) que sea hecho en español (no traducciones literales del inglés) que tomen en cuenta el contexto cultural.
Hace falta material que este al alcance (dirigido) a personas con una educación escolar elemental.
b) Los recursos que existen tienden a ser “devocionales” (novenas, biografías de santos/as, Guadalupe, etc.) y hace falta material de formación teológica (sacramental, litúrgica, justicia social, etc.) que tengan fundamentos teológicos sólidos Y estén al alcance de personas sencillas.
c) Material práctico y teológico pastoral para la formación integral de LIDERES (ejemplo: Planificación pastoral, formación de equipos litúrgicos, etc.)
2) ¿Qué resultado le gustaría ver de esta Conferencia?
a)|
Un compromiso de creadores/as y editores de trabajar juntos para hacer dichos materiales y tenerlos al alcance de nuestro pueblo (precios razonables).
b) Tener un conocimiento de cómo poder editar material que hemos creado
c) Establecer una red de relaciones nacional que permita continuar el diálogo y el trabajo en la creación de materiales para la comunidad Católica Hispana.
3. Hoy día ¿qué considera Ud. el mejor material en español para Católicos?
a)
La Biblia Católica de Jóvenes (Fe y Vida) porque toma en cuenta el aspecto cultural.

Aunque son traducciones a veces literales (y no esta completo el material), el estudio de Biblia de Little Rock porque facilita el liderazgo local.
c)
El curso de formación y catequesis y ministros parroquiales de la Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles . Zanotto, Luigi. Profundizando y madurando nuestra fe. (Mexico: Ediciones Dabar, 2001).
d)
Todo el programa de formación teológica y de catequistas del Instituto Internacional de Teologia a Distancia (Madrid, España). Contenido sólido pero no está adapatado para la realidad de EEUU.

¿Cuáles recursos necesita Ud. pero no puede encontrar o tiene que usar su creatividad para tenerlos?
a)
Todo tipo de formación integral pastoral para líderes laicos/as (ministerios, catequistas, coordinadores de comunidades, etc.)
b)
Audiovisuales en español (material de Powerpoint).
c)
Programas de pre-evangelización y evangelización (con manual para coordinadores) adaptados a la realidad del Hispanos en USA.

1.- Material de formación para adultos que sea cultural y gramaticalmente correcto y entendible. no solo traducciones literales del Inglés al Español.
2.- Que las casas editoras (Publishing companies) de los Estados Unidos pudieran conectarse con sus contrapartes en Latinoamérica para intercambiar textos y publicaciones en Español.
3.- He encontrado material apropiado (en orden alfabético) en: Alba House, Ligouri, LTP, MACC, Paulinas Distribuidora, RCL, Saint Mary Press y USCCB.
4.- Por lo pronto, la traducción al Español del libro de Eric Law, "The Wolf Shall Dwell with the Lamb" que entiendo MACC estaba traduciendo el año pasado.
Mi área de trabajo: Ministro Diocesano
1) Marketing! Publishers do not seem to know how to sell it [unlike Protestants], therefore, do not produce Spanish language materials for Hispanic Catholics.
2) Networking at least; at most a public commitment from publishers to produce more materials in Spanish.
3) Ligouri, Oregon Catholic Press are two successes. But so is AETH!
4) Bilingual liturgical vocabulary and rituals
I am an author/creator.
1. Materials that respect the low level or lack of education of the migrants and is cultural sensitive, not just a translation of some english book or resource.
2. Hope to get going production of materials that present in an appealing way the basics of the faith,
point to ways of growth and maturing spirtually,
that help the migrants with some of the problems they face with regard to many burdens they must endure,
and that warn against the traps and temptations of this American experience, a
nd finally, the challenges of the sects against their faith.
3. Success: flexibility, easy to use, inexpensive, able to be adapted on site, practical, and systematic (ordered)

1. What is your single greatest concern regarding Spanish language materials for
Hispanic Catholics?
Material is from another Spanish language country but is too difficult or complex
to understand. Spanish material is imported, but without regard to the region or
particular "dialects" of the audience.
2. What do you hope will come out of this conference?
To meet the goals of the conference somehow. A general awareness by Catholic companies
that already produce materials to produce more Spanish language materials.
3. What do you consider a success in Spanish Language materials for Catholics these
days?
La Fe magazine, Laredo Tx. Bilingual and translated locally, using regional idioms
and phrases.
KHOY 88.1 FM, Laredo Tx. Also streamlined on-line.
San Fernando Mass, San Antonio, Tx.
4. What resources do you need but can't find or must create yourself?
Similar to above; more Spanish language materials by existing Catholic companies

1. Single greatest concern is how Catholic News Service, in its news and other products, can best meet the emerging needs of the Hispanic market at a time when budgets are tight and new products have to be able to pay for themselves.
2. Better insight into what the market actually is.
3. Newspapers such as El Pregonero in the Archdiocese of Washington, but those success stories are not as many as they could be. We're willing to explore new markets and/or help promote other models that are cost-effective.

1.- Una de las preocupaciones que tengo referente al material para católicos es el costo. Segundo que la realidad de la comunidad de habla hispana es muy diversa en su estructura, tenemos familias con padres profesionales que no hablan Ingles, pero pueden colaborar a sus hijos, tenemos familias con padres obreros que saben leer y escribir, y familias donde los padres solo han llegado a un tercer grado de primaria o no leen ni escriben .pero todos ellos ansiosos de que sus hijos puedan recibir formación. Tercero, no siempre pero en algunas ocasiones ocurre que las historias de vida que conectan con la parte doctrinal o de fe no parte de la realidad de la audiencia al la que esta dirigida.
2.- El resultado que quisiera ver en esta conferencia es: Que se llegue a un acuerdo de proveer material a precios económicos, practico que se pueda utilizar en los diferentes estratos sociales que tenemos, que sea reproducible, y que se proporcione entrenamientos para su uso.
3.- Considero un material para los católicos de hoy debe tocar profundamente el contexto familiar, social, económico y político del inmigrante hispano en EE.UU.., que este material de preferencia sea basado en el leccionario, que promueva una formación integral, que nos lleve a un compromiso y acción.
4.- Materiales que nos ayuden a hacer un análisis critico de la realidad, materiales de formación para Directoras de Educación Religiosa accesible a la situación de DREs voluntarias.

Mi mayor precupacion en cuanto a materiales en espanol para catolicos en los Estados Unidos, es que por la escaces de ello se quiera traer material de otros paises e implementarlos aqui sin considerar la cultura donde estamos. Los Hispanos en USA vivimos una realidad diferente a la de nuestros hermanos en otros paises.
Ahora la misma preocupacion es si solo se hacen traducciones del ingles al espanol sin considerar las raices culturales.
2. Me gustaria concer recursos en espanol pero tambien saber de Instituciones que se interesen en la realidad de los Hispanos.

1 . What is your single greatest concern regarding Spanish language materials for Hispanic Catholics?
We’ve always struggled with knowing how to distribute our materials to Hispanic Catholics and whether or not all of those materials need to be printed in the Spanish language all of the time. We know there is an audience out there – we just don’t know how to reach them.
2. What do you hope will come out of this conference?
We are excited and enthusiastic simply to be represented at this conference. Our mandate is to animate the missionary spirit among U.S. Catholics – we know we have not successfully reached the Hispanic Catholic community and this is a disservice to them.
3. What do you consider a success in Spanish Language materials for Catholics these days?
As it relates to the work of our organization, we would answer Revista Maryknoll.
4. What resources do you need but can’t find or must create yourself?
Again, we lack sources for distribution and rely heavily on our network of diocesan directors. Often, these directors are out of touch with the local Hispanic community and are unable to provide assistance. In addition, we find ourselves simply “translating” materials from English into Spanish to meet a “perceived need” for Spanish materials. At this time, we have no creative resources for creating genuinely Hispanic materials that reflect the mission and goals of our organization.

1. What is your single greatest concern regarding Spanish language materials for Hispanic Catholics?
My greatest concern/disappointment regarding materials in Spanish is that most of them are literal translations that in many cases do not address the concerns of Hispanics. Our community’s needs are not met when the materials are not directly relevant to our lives in the US.
2. What do you hope will come out of this conference?
That the publishers will realize that we need materials (not translations) that are applicable to the Hispanic community. They should meet the needs of our population and be written in a language and grade level that is easy to understand.
3. What do you consider a success in Spanish Language materials for Catholics these days?
Effective materials in Spanish should deliver the message of evangelization and formation in a way that is easy to understand for people with different levels of education. They should be “User friendly” and the cost should be kept to a minimal in order for the general population to afford them.
4. What resources do you need but can’t find or must create yourself?
Materials related to Marriage Preparation/Convalidations, Marriage Enrichment, Parenting, Respect Life/Post Abortion counseling, and Ministry to the elderly.

1. What is your single greatest concern regarding Spanish language materials for Hispanic Catholics?
Quality in substance and language, as well as cultural sensitivity.
2. What do you hope will come out of this conference? ¿Qué resultado le gustaría ver de esta conferencia?
More and better Spanish and bilingual materials. Encouragement for U.S. Hispanic writers and composers to use their gifts, and for the publishers to find them.
Find effective ways for the pastoral ministers, musicians, dioceses, worship offices and
lay pastoral institutes to have knowledge of, and access to the materials being published.
3. What do you consider a success in Spanish Language materials for Catholics these days?
Those that are sensitive to the various “Hispanic” cultures; that are good in content,
and in knowledge of the language as well as those that strive to use inclusive language.
4. What resources do you need but can’t find or must create yourself?
Catechetical and Liturgical resources; especially training, and leadership training materials (print , video and other AV).

1. What is your single greatest concern regarding Spanish language materials for Hispanic Catholics?
My main concern is how to get this resource into the hands of the people for whom it is designed. The magazine has been published for 25 years, but distribution is not keeping pace with what we perceive as the growing need for this and other Spanish-language or bilingual resources for Hispanic Catholics.
2. What do you hope will come out of this conference?
I would be very interested to see some partnerships begin to develop between the providers of diverse Spanish-language and bilingual resources with the Hispanic Ministry and other ministry offices in which Hispanics participate around the country. I would also like to see some links among the resource providers themselves. The purpose of the partnerships could be to help resource providers produce more relevant materials for Hispanic Ministry and to help them understand, utilize and help strengthen existing networks for getting resources to the communities.
3. What do you consider a success in Spanish-language materials for Catholics these days?
I think one of the great success stories in Spanish-language publishing in the U.S. is El Pregonero, the Spanish-language newspaper of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., both for its diverse content and its grassroots promotion and distribution efforts. The newspaper has understood how to grow with the communities.
4. What resources do you need but can’t find or must create yourself?
Access to grassroots networks and promotional methods that can effectively bring our resources to the growing Hispanic communities that need/want them. We belong to organizations, attend conferences, but it does not seem to be sufficient for making our resources known, learning about additional needs and increasing the availability of our materials to the burgeoning communities.
