THURSDAY AFTERNOON PROCESS
October 13. 2005
GROUP COMMENTS
This is what we have heard
Insights from what we have learned
This is where we need to be moving
Morning
This is what we have heard
-
Need Spanish speaking materials.
Bring music from other places (Spain).
Move forward from pulpit to the bench.
Need & hunger for what we are talking about.
Challenge – negative responses – need for unity, openness for new support. Publishers to provide and distribute.
Fear of losing identity.
-
Methodology used – materials used/ w/ pictures and drawings. Impact and discussing.
Keep Identify and Affirm that identify.
Providing material that well identifies differences.
Consciousness that come out of the dominate class,
Ask – is this really what the people want? “What do you NEED”, who determines what is orthodox.
- .
- Different areas to divide among publishers.
Key solving and Immersing ourselves in the environment.
Good materials are expensive - dilemma.
- .
- Youth - a great need for material, great need for Ministry Formation – Leadership material grounded in the reality of the culture.
Need clarity of language – move communication between users and creators. Youth 9-12 Anglo – we assume we are on the same page with language translation.
Dialogue needed between Publishers and gatekeepers – Marketing.
- Common issues don’t all have common solutions, presence reflects desire and commitment.
Youth Ministry materials, Encounter family in Faith Development.
Knowing the basic needs of the immigrants and how they adapt to the catechetical community in spite and despite who the gatekeepers are and do, laity must need creative alternatives to reach out to the needs of bilingual people.
- Need for a diverse approach and provide Pastoral materials needs for groups within the church to develop lay leaders.
- A common catalog that presents organization, events catalog, directory.
Get the directives to know us and to face stereotypes or previous concepts about Hispanics.
Use Technology, get to the gatekeepers.
Use Standard Spanish Language.
Popular materials.
- Two critical issues…
What will they buy?
Need improved communication and cooperation among each other.
- Diferentes “clases” de Hispanos –indocumentados/ nacidos en EU, hay que “address” cada uno aparte.
Necesidad de una editorial latina en EU.
Cada grupo necesita una atención especial (urgente) para los jóvenes no hay nada.
- Language is the transmitter of Faith.
Do we use language to sustain culture or to function?
It seems the second generation is using it to sustain the faith traditions even when they can speak English.
Find Spanish authors / creators of materials.
- Lack of materials for youth.
Develop more online resources in Spanish to especially reach youth audience. Tranculturated or Inculturated materials vs. translated materials (except for Scriptural materials).
- Scope of materials requested remains wide; there is a new resource for pastoral leaders.
We can’t only translate, we must respect culture.
There is a need to understand that there is diversity within the Hispanic community.
Publishers need to do a better job listening, there is transculturation.
Diocesan leaders say we’re not responding to their needs.
- Lots of energy goes into translation.
Reluctance into entering into commercial media, need more bilingual / need to work in multicultural awareness (racism, discrimination), multicultural, not just bilingual, also need to produce from the heart.
Need to produce materials in Pastoral formation & Leadership.
Need to network; need to recognize many languages of the Americas.
- Not just producing resources, distribution; faith formation, domestic church, need to take advantage of cultural opportunities, need to create but also focus- the people are beyond the institutional church has gone.
Oral culture – oral presentation – multi media.
We’re losing 2nd. generation to other traditions- need to focus on youth.
Financial realities sometimes constrain outreach.
- As producers, we must be open to listen to the people / customers about what they need.
Productions made with the people involved produces much better quality materials.
It is a challenge for producers to publish material that will sell.
Hispanic led media production and radio use could be good ways to go.
We are more conscious of the costs involved to publish good materials.
The Hispanic community is very diverse culturally and in their proficiency with Spanish and across generations.
We must be transcultural and where the people are.
For everyone we are reaching in the Church, there are even more who we are not reaching.
We have to use the new ecclesiology for pastoral accompaniment and go out to where the people are, not expecting the people to come to the Church.
- Stop the translation call for the creative energies of Hispanics encouraging them to publish.
Freedom to network and share what works in ministry.
Need for materials that are not written, simple but with essence and strong content.
Working together.
Need for materials to be brought to the homes.
Discontent of the Youth-customers and traditions not part of their experience.
Need to be creative with Youth and young adults.
Need different ways to reach youth.
Be mindful of those Hispanics who speak different languages, sensitive to diversity of Hispanic Cultures.
Material need to be incarnated, affordable and accessible.
Spanish is very important for maintaining cultural identity.
Recouping values, language and life.
Broad perspective.
The Heart is more important that the head-the Liturgy and Rituals are so important.
Need of multisensory approach.
Up
Insights from what we have learned
-
Who are the many Hispanic communities - we differ.
Identify who we are (Linguistics’).
Cannot rush for purpose of finishing.
Affirmation – people of the heart- people have something to present.
Being right or effective.
- .
- Reaching the head through the heart.
Transculturation.
Building relationships.
Theology of accompaniment situating ourselves in the community.
How you situate yourself in the community in order to respond.
Adapt materials to a mobile, hiding community, short text, and photos.
- Identify unites who can write for adults, adolescents, young adults, have neglected the Hispanic professional people.
Exploit new technologies, e-mail internet, and popular culture.
- Getting the gatekeeper to spread the word.
Even the not-for-profit seeks funding to further support its mission.
Web Clearinghouse for information sharing.
Importance of knowing your audiences.
Knowing how to integrate head & heart.
Materials to empower leaders.
- The concept of the gatekeepers and the control of novenas resources and transculturation, diversity among sub-cultures.
Cultural competency in development programs is essential.
Language issue- we need to be clear about language we are using in communication and print.
- We have learned there is much to do.
Materials need to be transcultural, Spanish to English instead of translating English to Spanish as well as cultural traditions.
Materials for Leadership Development to enable our abandoned immigrants.
- Going to Spain or Argentina is not solution.
Need funds to develop writers with education.
Looking for Hispanic entrepreneurs as a different model of viewing different underlying theologies & sharing Catechetical / Adult Formation programs.
- Directory and campaign of who we are as publishers with the help of artists/ writers in order to communicate better thru technology.
Bring young people w/ long form of commitment & support them.
- .
- Difficulty finding images that will appeal to Spanish / Latino culture.
Our youth work is aimed at first generation, loosing second and third generations who have traditions but no understanding of them.
How to reach the unchurched, families, etc.
- Plenty ideas, but where does the funding come from?
Finding funding is time consuming.
Beware the Mexican jaugernaut.
How to make generic Spanish materials?
This is both a challenge and a need.
Repeat this time of meeting.
More materials for the family/ home.
Pay attention to God speaking through Latino popular culture
- Need to setup a process to listen & be respectful of cultural diversity.
Be more sensitive to new stories concerning Hispanic issues, key question “ “What will they buy?
Think more about delivering Bishops message in a practical way/ ask more questions, need a definition of what’s “inexpensive”.
- Stop translating, produce unique materials, have resources for people in programs, parishes.
Spend more time on mythology, not all on content – train for skills in leaders – (“it’s how to do” that needs more energy.)
Personal invitations- Need to do more listening- Question of appropriate materials for cultural application, but not only in Spanish (second/ third generation – English.)
- Need not to rely on things produce in other countries.
Need to produce things here.
Need to take advantage of all forms of media, need to go where the people are. Need to empower people to minister to each other, work from grassroots upward, need to produce materials that they need.
Need gathering everyone for everything – work with people where they are, go to the homes, to their communities.
- We have given importance to the materials, but the facilitators/catechists and the methodology they use from the heart are as important as the materials.
Many people are not trained catechists.
There are good materials but they don’t know how to use them.
How do producers help users get the money to purchase the materials?
We still need to determine how much the internet is being used by Hispanics and how it could be used.
Who are the gatekeepers? The Bishops – the USCCB?
Where is the money going to come from?
How do we effectively reach the Hispanic market and get more collaboration and cooperation among publishers, creators and users?
Use radio, family theater, cable television, etc.
- Publishers – please keep in mind the multidimensional needs of Hispanics – age, levels of literacy, basic to graduate level materials which foster on-going formation.
Important that creators and publishers listen to the people – what do they need.
Involvement of others in the ministry is key.
Need to inspire our youth – not currently doing a good job.
Use of images and technology and media – look at how we can use that better.
Copy right issues, freedom to network, share what we’ve done and what works for the sake of ministry – not necessarily for the purpose of publication.
Share the good stuff that will enrich each other.
This might eventually lead publishers to print things from the trenches.
Need to think outside the box – leave behind the target audience concept but look at where the folks are and work.
Need to take more initiative at building our own networks.
Solid materials for all ages.
Finding ways for dialogue to happen.
Leadership development is multidimensional – how to break them into manageable pieces forming leaders for the entire church!
Respect the fact that the written media is not the only vehicle for sharing knowledge.
Up
This is where we need to be moving
-
Simple… - Catechetical (including all –not parts) Teaching.
Mestizaje – Mestizo (2 Cultures) combine roots.
Invite the user to feel part / participant.
Practical presentation to publishers- Simply the Heart.
Adult Learning models.
The Exodus Story is the Immigrant. – Fiesta / Familia/ Dolor/ Sacrifice/Community.
-
Before create a product – continue to create.
Enculturation as faith exp. in merging look w/eyes of faith to see what in the two are Gospel values, (to preach)
Inculturation – reflection – those that are not in common but not to merge.
-
Grassroots efforts shared via a web-clearing-house.
Create multi-purpose materials.
Advisory Board needed for collaborative materials.
Developing Leadership Strengthening relationship with gatekeeper.
Protecting profitability.
- Instead of us all complaining, there should be collaborating, public groups/ model/ co-publishing, how silly to be duplicating our missions, perhaps diversity on areas of concern, different issues for non-profits.
Websites, available resources to be reviewed and evaluated and collaborated.
Go down to the grassroots, quit being low-range, need to network more with world religion / LCWR.
- Role of Hispanic Ministry Office?
Effective.
* What would be an effective form of networking and collaboration? based on all these differences and all level of expertise.
More involvement from the Bishops, more real dialogue with Bishops to share feedback from people (users).
- Create for who we are working with-
Create, don’t just translate-
Collaborate- publisher to publisher.
Work from the heart/speaks to the heart.
Truth of the Gospel, @ appropriate level.
Address the needs of the youth/young adult people but need to look ahead to the step of the church.
Have curriculum development teams that collaborate with each other –share our own ideals with each other –do not reinvent the wheel.
- What we need is how to be Human Resources ourselves.
Have multicultural examples in the same book for everyone.
Formation for Catechetical personnel have experienced catechists involved in material development, need to open eyes of gatekeepers in utilizing resources already present.
Publishers are sensitive to gender, language, context, reality of our different populations, not just races.
- Model of collaboration on the web.
Empowering a group to develop new plans, need to have more knowledge.
Provide Religious Formation materials in Multicultural – Language (this includes intercultural).
- Educate the gatekeeper and those who educate.
Cultural sensitivity in leaders from the Bishop down.
(Immersion, keynote presentations by Hispanics, networking).
Mentoring young people to succeed and become leaders.
- May be able to work with National Organizations such as CBPA and CPA to further the efforts from this meeting.
In two years have another meeting like this?
Start a dialogue at the top with MACC group and addressing the heads of the houses, produce a style sheet, communicate better, dialogue needs to continue and we need to stay mission focus.
- Create materials that are representative of all groups.
Establish networks of authors / creators, publishers, distributors.
Challenge Latinos to write, provide support (financial) to create pool of authors.
A clearinghouse of what is available that is easily accessible.
- Invite theologians of universities who work with second generations and who can be creators of materials.
More online materials for the different generations.
Needs assessment of resources provided and evaluation of materials currently used.
Look for non-traditional distributors such as Yerberias and Botánicas.
- We have an opportunity to listen.
What about a session at LA Congress to address what people need and what they’ll buy.
Need to find new models, need to listen and ask more questions.
Train bilingual reporters.
Need people who are trained to write about the faith @ specific levels.
Take this conference to the next level & have publishers work together so we don’t duplicate efforts.
We need to join forces.
- Pool the resources that are working already , people have put together programs, workbooks, curricula, mythology- we can share beyond publication- use internet and other sharing media/ resources.
Broaden the consultation – publishers are consulting someone, but not necessarily practitioners.
Are we reaching out to an adult church – who are disciples, have a voice, culture of church institution.
- Challenge to community – make space for people to do for themselves [PR} Recognize the need for local adaptation – guidelines – pastoral planning/ process.
Reclaiming some of our experiential traditions – Accompaniment model.
- A subsidy is needed by the USCCB to support the production of materials, videos, etc.
How are we including the customer, the people in the development of resources?
The bigger changes need to take place in our own church rather than by producers.
We need to move with technology, using symbols more effectively to develop relational communities and use the codes inherent in language.
Producers should emphasize teaching the multi-sensory, multi-level methodology to use materials more effectively.
Respond to the question: Who is the customer?
Use the internet, magazines, Catholic Update, etc. more effectively.
Whoever in the parish is purchasing the products will determine what they need.
Some customers are accessible, but some have no transportation.
Reaching the people in the underground church who are afraid to go out because they don’t have documents is a big challenge.
Funding for creating-producing-using e.g.: The Catholic Communication Campaign is a collection with a focus on the pastoral projects of the U.S. Bishops.
- Network idea can be acted upon immediately.
Decision makers should be invited to be with us in these types of meeting.
Use internet for communication purposes.
Publishers to use internet more – materials that are downloadable.
Use Hispanic TV.
Investigate in order to respond appropriately to the diverse groups.
Unity among publishers in sharing research.
Connect between research and production.
Area of Youth and Young Adult – publishers and users spend time with youth and young adults – listen, tap into their gifts and use them.
Think tanks for sharing and story telling.
Publishers to work together better instead of everybody doing everything similarly – have companies choose particular focus.
This can model to other groups to enrich the whole.
Do more group minded processes.
Call people to contribute (think tank).
(Publications in Spanish to have a brochure accompanying the resource so the “gatekeepers” can made good decisions.)
Have to have materials at different levels to reach the educated, literate and limited literacy skills.
